Chapter Twenty

A few nights later, we were on our way to see Cal's performance at Westerton’s Café. Since word had gotten around, we wanted to get there early and get a good seat. We arrived around dinnertime, and the hostess led us to the patio which was adorned with twinkling lights. Even though the fall weather was cool, the heat lamps warmed the patio creating a cozy and comfortable atmosphere.

Cal and the guitarist were playing soft background music. Amanda and Andrew were already sitting down, and the patio tables were filling up. I recognized Clover and Arlethe sipping large colorful drinks.

“Hello,” I said to Amanda and Andrew as we sat down. They greeted us with hellos.

“Shall we split a bottle of wine?” Steve asked.

“Yes, how about a bottle of house white and house red?” Andrew said when the waitress came over.

We placed our dinner order, chatting about events of the week and some of the drama that occurred.

“I can't believe that incident with Crestmore,” Andrew said. “Throwing the papers like that and making threatening statements. He wasn't doing a good job as the president. You’d think he'd be happy to be replaced.”

“Maybe, he was hoping to have his dinners reimbursed,” Amanda suggested.

“His behavior is so unbelievable,” Steve said.

“I don't like Minnie very much, but for him to say ‘I'll get you’ is nuts,” commented Amanda.

“And for her to make threatening comments to you, Tarsey, is equally nuts. We have a right as homeowners to question how the board is managing the HOA,” said Andrew.

“The developer should have had the HOA set up so that it would be effectively functioning. There should have been some transition committee overseeing the process. I'm wondering what happened that it ended up in the state that it's in,” Steve added.

“Steve, could the developer have done nothing at all?” I asked.

“I can't imagine, but it's possible,” Steve remarked.

“Minnie worked in the office with him, could he have left her in charge?” I asked.

“Maybe. Well anyway, Justin will investigate all of this,” Steve explained.

“Tarsey, any more information on finding out if Silver was Felicity's cat?” asked Amanda.

“Not yet. I'm hoping that Zelda can stop by soon and see if she recognizes him. I also want to ask next time I take him to the vet what they think.”

“Cal's music is great. What a wonderful addition to the dinner hour,” commented Andrew.

“It’s perfect,” I said.

The music stopped, and I noticed Cal was taking a break.

“Hello, friends, thanks for coming tonight,” he said stopping at the table.

“We've been enjoying the music,” I said.

“I'm so glad,” Cal said.

“Did you practice here this week?” I asked.

“Yes,” Cal said. “It worked out well too. It was a relief not to be interrupted by the table saw or opera.

“That’s encouraging. I have another idea for you,” I said.

“Oh?” Cal said.

“A row of arborvitae trees,” I suggested.

“Do those look like Christmas trees?” he asked.

“Yes,” I said. “They grow tall about ten to fifteen feet and would make a nice buffer against noise while providing privacy.
